As we endure a seemingly endless winter, we can
always count on alcohol as a no-fail option to keep us warm. And no
drink is more seasonally appropriate in near-freezing temps than a good
old Hot Toddy. Traditionally drunk before going to bed and sometimes
touted as a remedy for the common cold, the Bourbon and tea-based
beverage not only heats up your body, but it’s extremely easy to make (a
majority of the ingredients are likely already in your pantry).
While recipes vary, our friends over at on N.Y.C.’s Lower East Side make an especially unique version that’s spiced up like a mulled wine with cinnamon, nutmeg, and tonka bean. “The warmth of the tea, the soothing whiskey, and the surprising spices make the Hot Toddy a seasonal staple,” says general manager and head bartender Damien Aries. Check out the how-to below straight from the source, complete with a blazing GIF.
Directions:
1. In a pot over medium heat, add all of your ingredients and warm until hot, just before it boils. Remove from heat and carefully pour into a glass. Add the spices on top and garnish with a cinnamon stick and orange slice.
Note: Experimental Cocktail Club boils their water using a flame gun instead of a traditional stovetop.
