Last night, a band of monks descended on Carnegie Hall, chanting loudly and banging symbols with great vigor. Three hours later, , Patti Smith, and shared the same stage. The two disparate groups were gathered at the storied venue for the 25th Tibet House US Benefit Concert, held annually to support the work of the , a non-profit founded at the request of the Dalai Lama that aims to promote the culture of the Tibetan people. This year’s show included performances by the aforementioned artists, who concluded the evening with a lively group rendition of Smith’s “People Have the Power,” plus Dev Hynes and The Flaming Lips.
Neilson Barnard/Getty Images Later on, the eclectic mix of musicians and other honored guests, including and Ira Glass, congregated several avenues away at N.Y.C.’s Metropolitan West for dinner—a tasty mix of roast chicken, salmon, mushroom ravioli, Brussels sprouts, and kale salad. As they noshed, attendees mingled with each other and gabbed about the cause that’s important to all of them. “The Tibetan cultural preservation issue is so crucial, as is all cultural preservation,” Thurman told InStyle. “This is a unique and peaceful and beautiful culture, and it should be protected.” Hynes, meanwhile, remained mesmerized by the monks. “The performance was mindblowing,” he said.
