The First Thing Helen Mirren Does When She Gets Home from a Fancy Premiere May Surprise You

Whether she’s or waltzing down a red carpet,  always manages to keep things classic. And last night at The Woman in Gold premiere, clad in a black  dress, she also proved that she’s a fuss-free kind of gal. “It’s a one stop shop for me,” she said of choosing her dress by the duo. “I zip it up and it fit perfectly and it’s brilliant. They just do beautiful evening wear.”

But just because she’s a Dame doesn’t mean she doesn’t love to come home and put her feet up after a long day just like the rest of us, telling InStyle that her post red carpet routine is to “take my shoes off, put my pajamas on, switch on the TV, and watch Dance Moms.”

Joining Mirren at the premiere was co-star , clad in a fuscia  dress that featured midriff cutouts. “I just love it,” she told InStyle of her sexy, sparkly ensemble which first caught her eye on the catwalk during New York Fashion Week. “I saw it at his runway show and I love pink.” Sounds like quite a fun girl’s night out.

Revenge Recap: The Details on Emily’s Floral Dress at the Dramatic Reveal

The real Amanda Clarke is finally standing up. Last night on , took the mic to make a major revelation—at the groundbreaking ceremony, she tells the crowd that Daniel Grayson saved her life when she was attacked by Malcolm Black, and that she is the real Amanda Clarke. For such a pivotal moment, costume designer Jill Ohanneson wanted to find a dress that encompassed the worlds of both Emily and Amanda, which she did with a floral print gown by .

“I wanted her to come across not as a conniving, scheming person, which she kind of has been, so we were playing against that since she’s revealing herself in such a public way on the air,” she tells InStyle. “It worked for me emotionally, and Emily was into it too. The color, texture, and pattern all felt right because there is so much going on through the whole scene.”

The costume team had the idea of a white dress in mind to symbolize that Emily was coming clean about her identity, once she saw the contrast between the soft blossoms and graphic stems against the transparent fabric, Ohanneson knew the Herrera number was the one.

“It had the little daisy flowers from when Amanda was young, but also the black, thorny stems that symbolized the Emily we know, so for me, it combined who she used to be with who she became,” she says. “The bit of sheerness at the top suggested she was being transparent and revealing everything, without the dress being overly-sexual.” Ohanneson altered the gown to a tea-length skirt, then topped off the effect with a metallic belt, and a set of dangling earrings.

This season, s costume designer Dan Lawson is exclusively giving InStyle readers tips for what to wear to work, inspired by the characters’ ensembles on the show.

On last night’s episode of , Alicia Florrick () won the state’s attorney race, something that should have had a little more joy than the immediate drama that ensued after. Nevertheless, she remained chic as ever as she dealt with her new set of challenges, thanks to costume designer . This week, his favorite look was this white wool jacket, he told us, which featured a modified scalloped hem. “I wanted Alicia to be very clean and elegant, but still stylish,” he told us. “This shawl collar reads classic, but the scalloped edge says interesting and unique. It proves that even when you want to go simple and elegant and straight-forward with a look, a little extra detail can make all the difference.”

Your takeaway tip: “Use a unique detail to make what could be a flat look into eye-catching style that shows your personality as well as your discerning taste,” Lawson says.

Here’s How to Decode Color-Correcting Primers

Like a base coat for your manicure, face primers provide a canvas for smooth, even coverage. They fill lines, keep oil at bay, and give your makeup some serious staying power. So what’s going on with all the different colors? Each one tackles a different issue, from evening out areas of redness to brightening up a sallow complexion. And they only look that vibrant in the tube: As you apply, they blend translucently into skin, whether worn under foundation or on their own for a fresh-faced look.

Here, we’ve decoded 5 types of color correctors and how you can add them to your routine. Find the one that best works for you, below!

Purple:
Sallow skin sufferers, this one’s for you. Primers in shades of lavender or purple like e.l.f.’s Studio Mineral Infused Face Primer (above, $6; ) counteract unwanted yellow tones for a brighter complexion.

Green:

Courtesy

Best for those who are prone to acne, green tints work like magic to conceal areas of redness. A pea-sized dab of Make Up For Ever’s Step 1 Skin Equalizer ($36; ) is all it takes to calm blemishes before foundation.

Pink:

Courtesy

Dealing with a dull complexion? Think pink—the color is known for adding luminosity to lackluster skin. Give Clinique’s Super Primer ($27; ) a try to achieve a natural, healthy-looking glow.

Yellow:

Applying a tinge of yellow will warm your complexion, even out ruddiness, and erase signs of fatigue. Prep with Koh Gen Do’s Makeup Primer Base ($28; ) to instantly give tired skin a boost.

Peach:

Add a peach hue to your routine if you’re looking to disguise dark discolorations like veins, sunspots and under eye circles. We like Smashbox’s Photo Finish Color Correcting Foundation Primer ($39; ), which rejuvenates skin with vitamins A and E.

Patterned Blush Palettes So Pretty, You Almost Don’t Want to Use Them

If it weren’t for the gorgeous glow these mini works of art created on our skin, we’d probably have them hanging on our wall instead of stashed away in our makeup bags. Patterned blushes boast more than just a pretty face—depending on where you concentrate your brush, you can pick up different tones to contour areas of your face, and highlight others using one streamlined pan. We’re obsessed with the Burberry S/S 15 Runway Palette ($68; ), which mirrors the hand-painted vibe and airy petal tones seen on the runway, and the Philip Treacy’s Art Deco-themed Highlight Powder for MAC ($32; ). True to the designer’s elegant aesthetic, the soft pink gets a high definition finish, thanks to the jolt of subtle pewter shimmer that creates a natural dewy appearance.

Enviable apricot flush aside, Dior’s Glowing Color Cannage Palette ($65; ) also gives a nod to the the label’s heritage with the trademark woven pattern in three shades of matte and sparkly coral tones. If your complexion is in need of some extra hydration, you’ll love the nourishing ingredients mixed into Tarte’s Colored Clay Bronzer Blush ($30; ) and the Physicians Formula Argan Wear Blush ($13; ). Tarte’s blush has purple and gold clays baked into the design to give your complexion a shot of moisture, while the Physicians Formula mosaic is infused with a generous amount of argan oil.

Brandon Flowers on Jamming with Haim and Why He Hates Wearing Suits Onstage

It’s always challenging for indie bands to say relevant, and few existing acts have had as much long-term success as The Killers. The Las Vegas-based quartet fronted by the devilishly handsome Brandon Flowers is pretty much an anomaly: After cementing their place in the music scene in 2004 with the release of their critically-acclaimed debut album Hot Fuss (and a very memorable performance on The O.C.), they returned two years later with Sam’s Town, which yielded “When You Were Young”—largely viewed as one of their most successful singles to date.

Subsequently, 2008’s Day & Age and 2012’s Battle Born sold a collective four million copies and earned a slew of awards, including Best International Band by NME. But despite the group’s massive worldwide success, their fearless leader Brandon Flowers has chosen to fly solo in recent years, coming out with his second of two albums this May, called The Desired Effect. But die-hard fans need not worry: According to Flowers, The Killers aren’t going anywhere. We caught up with the singer after his show at Webster Hall in N.Y.C. Here’s an excerpt from our conversation:

What was it like growing up in Vegas? Are you a big fan of The Strip?

I love it. Some people can’t wrap their heads around it. I actually grew up on the outskirts in a town called Henderson, but we’d visit when family members would come in from out of town. We’d go see The Mirage, or The Luxor would be finished and be the biggest hotel in the world. There was always something exciting happening.

I read you worked as a bell boy out there.

I started out working at golf courses and then I moved on to bussing tables at Caesar’s Palace and The Aladdin. Then I became a bell man at The Gold Coast just off the strip. I thought it was very exciting. I thrived off of the hustle and bustle and the turnover rate.
Should fans of The Killers be worried about your burgeoning solo career?
No, it’s nothing too different from the last one. An ideal world for me is to be able to do them both right now.
The Desired Effect sounds like a departure from your last solo album (2010’s Flamingo). Is that due to teaming up with producer Ariel Rechtshaid (Haim, Vampire Weekend, Madonna)?
Ariel’s funky. He brings the funk.
He must’ve recruited Danielle Haim for your collaboration on “Can’t Deny My Love.”
He produced their record, so she was around. A lot of people don’t realize what a great dummer she is and how musical she is.
Haim had a big blowout debut similar to The Killers in 2004. Do you have any words of wisdom for the sisters?
It’s tough. The ideal trajectory for a band used to be to start off and get bigger as you go, and you evolve and you have a breakthrough record. That’s the romantic notion of it all. But when you come out with a big record first, you’re just instantly thrust into the limelight and all those expectations are put on you. They should just approach the next record like there’s no tomorrow—just like they would’ve done the first one. One of the best pieces of advice we ever got was from Bono: “Spare us the interesting second record.” One is great, but it isn’t enough.
Are you sick of playing songs from Hot Fuss at this point?
I think it’s nice. There are people that are going to be at the concerts that have heard it live 100 times, and there are people that it’ll still be their first time, so I’m still buzzing off of that. I haven’t gotten tired of it yet.
Let’s talk about your style for a minute. You used to be a big proponent of the suit. What made you decide to abandon that look?
Honestly, it’s tough to perform in. The more that I got involved in becoming the frontman, the harder it was. You think of Freddie Mercury onstage in a tank top and a pair of jeans, and he was free to perform. Had he been confined to a three-piece suit, he wouldn’t have been the performer that he was. But there’s probably a middle ground we could find without being as scantily clad as Freddie was.
Do you have a favorite piece in your wardrobe right now?
Probably the sparkly Saint Laurent jacket I wore on The Tonight Show. I hate saying the name [of the designer], though. I call it “S.L.”
Listen to “Can’t Deny My Love” below, and pre-order The Desired Effect for $8 on the .

Video: Watch the Fashion Show from the Rockettes’ New York Spring Spectacular

It’s Rockettes season! Wait, so soon? Indeed, the world-famous Rockettes are back at Radio City Music Hall after the Christmas/holiday season for the first new show in its 81-year history. This time, they’re on stage with the , which gives the 6,000 guests in the theater each night a tour through the history and highlights of N.Y.C., from the Metropolitan Museum of Art to Central Park to Broadway to the sports teams to Ellis Island to even New York Fashion Week.

Last night was opening night for the show, and spectacular it was. Nashville’s Laura Benanti stars as Jenna, the #girlboss billionaire tech company exec who’s trying to digitize the New York experience, and Dancing with the Stars’s Derek Hough is the angel sent down from heaven, via the voice command of Whoopi Goldberg, to convince her to get out from behind her screen and live in the moment. (Side note: The Easter bunny shows up a lot, too—it’s a kid-friendly show, after all!)

The New York Fashion Week scene was one of our favorite numbers—no surprise there. “New York City is the fashion capital of the world,” the giant voice inside the theater declares, and all of the sudden, a runway appears, cameramen surround it, and the Rockettes model iconic looks from three designers: vibrant printed wrap dresses by , floral day dresses by , and dramatic red-carpet looks by . Watch an exclusive video of that scene above.

We also enjoyed the numerous cameos, including Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Donald Trump, and , who voices the Alice in Wonderland statue in the Central Park scene. “I haven’t heard my voice yet on stage,” she told us before going to pose with the Rockettes pre-show. “I don’t know what it sounds like or looks like, but I hear it’s freaking cool. I usually have a really deep voice, but I made sure Alice was more light and cutesy.” (It was.)

A photo posted by BELLA (@bellathorne) on

As for Benanti, she hopes theatergoers leave with a message. “I really appreciate how this show is teaching people, especially young people, that while technology is important, it can not be the only thing,” Benanti told us before the show began. “We have to, at some point, put our devices down and be with each other because there is no substitute for the real thing. I think that’s an important message to send to young people and their families.”

The New York Spring Spectacular runs through May 3. Find your tickets at .

Christina Hendricks Tricks Us with Two Dresses (but It’s Actually One)

In a move of playful deception, star unveiled two looks in one night—with one look.

At last night’s Mad Men Black & Red Ball, the redhead bombshell made a dramatic entrance in an incredible teal butterfly-embroidered  taffeta ball gown that swept the red carpet and extravagantly ballooned at the waist. A moment later, Hendricks was snapped in the same design but without the voluminous skirt. Was it collapsible? Had she switched outfits? No, it was neither. The ball skirt was detachable, and she had simply removed it for the second set of shots.

Umm, genius? We think so.

3 Ways to Feel Good About Your Neck

The following is from the post, “3 Ways to Feel Good About Your Neck,” which originally appeared on .

Nora Ephron once wrote, “Our faces are lies and our necks are the truth. You have to cut open a redwood tree to see how old it is, but you wouldn’t if it had a neck.” Here are three ways to keep your neck in fine form:

1. Moisturize

2. Protect
‘s ($42) super-thin formula in a near-universal tint evens out splotchy skin while SPF 50 guards against sun damage. Put it on every day just after your bra but before your blouse, to make sure it has time to dry.

3. Exfoliate

Behold, a Curling Iron for People Who Can’t Work a Curling Iron

If you’ve never suffered a curling iron-induced burn, consider yourself among the privileged few. It’s the reason why I tend to shy away from hair irons of all sorts—that is, until now.

I love the look of big, bouncy, brushed-out curling-iron curls, and when I went on a quest to find a worthy substitute for my standard curler, I stumbled upon Hot Tools Thermal Hot Air Brush ($26; ).

Hot Tools Thermal Hot Air Brush Courtesy

Turns out, you get some serious bang for your buck with this one, as it works simultaneously as a round brush, hair dryer, and curler. Not unlike your traditional curling iron, its got a self-rotating barrel. But, the magic lies in the fact that this device dries and curls at the same time, so the air enables hair to glide more easily through the tool (the flexible nylon bristles don’t hurt, either).

Being that I’m perpetually in pursuit of adding volume to my fine, flat hair, I first used the tool as I would a round brush, focusing less on curling and more on adding some oomph near my roots. The tool totally came through—and I was nearly giddy about the time I saved by skipping my usual blow dryer/round brush balancing act. Later, I used the device specifically to curl my hair and was equally thrilled with the curling iron-like results.

And just like that, my fear of curlers is conquered. As for my quest for the perfect tool for big, bouncy curls? Officially over.

Channel Your Inner Mermaid with This Remixed Surf Spray for Curly Strands

Ever since ‘s now-infamous Surf Spray ($27; )  launched in 2001, the beauty world has continued to sing its praises to the tune of any hit that also made its debut in the early aughts. Though the original formula worked wonders at giving fine and straight strands that lived-in surfer girl texture, for the rest of us curly and coarse hair types, the product proved to be effective, albeit a bit drying. Now, the brand’s new Surf Infusion spray ($29; ) is rolling out just in time for mermaid hair season with a revamped formula that won’t leave your ringlets parched.

Surf Infusion is equipped with an innovative salt-in-oil concoction, which fuses hydrating mango, palm, coconut, and passion fruit oils with the sea salt texturizing agent. The oil counteracts the drying effects of the salt, while amping up the tousled effect, and providing protection against the sun’s UV rays. “Infusing that saltiness with oils as not been done like this before,” says Laurent Philippon, Bumble and Bumble Global Artistic Director. “It brings the right amount of moisture to hair, with that beautiful beach texture.” Simply shake the bottle to mix the formula, then spritz it onto either damp or dry hair to channel your inner beach babe. Pick up a bottle now for $29 at !

This Sonic Cleansing Brush Is a Game-Changer for Sensitive Skin

Though sonic cleansing brushes are great for getting your face super-clean, the scrubbing action can be a little too aggressive for more sensitive complexions, and after a few uses, the bristles on the brush tend to get a little funky from the makeup and dirt removed from your skin. Enter Michael Todd’s Soniclear tool ($149; ), which is armed with ultra-soft bristles infused with an innovative technology. A wet brush head can be a breeding ground for bacteria and could cause even more flare-ups if not cleansed properly, but thanks to the anti-microbial formula each bristle is steeped in during the manufacturing process, Michael Todd’s version keeps your skin and the tool itself safe from skin-irritating elements.

True to the brand’s natural formulas, the anti-microbial solution uses ingredients derived from organic materials that are tough on germs and bacteria, but gentle on your skin. The technology stops bacteria from reproducing on the brush head, meaning you can spend less time washing the tool, and more time perfecting your complexion. Instead of replacing the brush attachment every 3 months, the anti-microbial formula allows you to swap it out every 6, or twice a year. Of course, this doesn’t substitute washing your face brush altogether—after each use, we recommend rinsing the brush head with a gentle soap and warm water to remove any makeup left behind, and sticking it in the included charging station to dry completely. Pick up a kit for yourself, which includes a body brush attachment, trio of face cleansers, and charging station, for $149 at  and at Ulta stores nationwide now!

Eat to the Beat: How to Reserve Your Festival Food for Coachella

The post below entitled, “How to Reserve Your Festival Food Now for Coachella,” originally appeared on .

We’ve been to Coachella a couple of times now, and it has one of the best collections of music anywhere in the world. But here’s the thing: There are serious trade-offs. The weather in the desert is less than hospitable, bathrooms are hard to come by, and the lines for food might make you think you are standing in front of the last funnel cake stand on earth. But the festival is attacking that last problem this year.

The festival partnered with to let festival-goers actually make reservations to eat during the madness. Last year, Coachella gave attendees pop-up restaurants for the first time with food from the likes of L.A.’s Bäco Mercat and Night + Market. This year, they are expanding their offerings and will actually make it easier to get the food—at least, if you plan ahead. Using the Reserve app will give diners with VIP wristbands the opportunity to get $50 prix fixe menus from chefs like street food pioneer Roy Choi. The app also lets you pay ahead of time, so there aren’t any issues trying to split a check in the 105 degree heat when you just want to get back and hear Ratatat.

For anyone without a VIP wristband who wants to splurge, you can reserve a table at Outstanding in the Field, a four-course pop-up put on by a rotating group of chefs that comes with cocktail and wine pairings, as well as VIP access for the entire day for $225.

Before making reservations, everyone should know that while the app itself is free, Reserve charges for their service. Coachella reservations will cost $5 apiece. But anything that makes good food easier to get at a festival full of 90,000 people is fine by us. Reservations are now live, so if you’re hoping for a little Roy Choi between sets, start making plans soon. You can grab the Reserve app in the or stores.

Shaun Leane Reimagines His Alexander McQueen Runway Creations into Daring New Jewels

In this #RocksMyWorld feature, InStyle’s jewelry and watch editor Marion Fasel shares the inside scoop on the treasures that are on her radar. Follow Fasel on Instagram () to see more gems that rock her world.

When met Shaun Leane in London during the late 1990s the fashion designer became immediately fascinated by techniques the master jeweler used to create pieces in precious gems and metals. A fast friendship formed based on an appreciation for art and craft and mutual interests in history and aesthetics. By the time McQueen was preparing to present his fourth collection he persuaded Leane to make statement accessories for the show.

“At first I found it difficult to think how I could make large pieces in the materials I was using but Lee [McQueen’s given first name] said ‘Shaun you are such a skilled craftsman if you apply your skills to other materials, you can create anything,’” remembers Leane. “He helped me change my thought process.” For over 17 years Leane worked on around 30 shows with Alexander McQueen. Many of his dramatic designs are featured in  the new exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

In celebration of the retrospective Leane created a capsule collection, the Limited Edition Reflective Series. It will be available for the duration of the exhibition from March 14 to Aug. 2 at the Harrods, and London’s Selfridges. The jewelry designer sat down with InStyle to tell us all about it.

What ignited the idea for this new collection?
When I had the pieces the Victoria & Albert had selected brought from my archive to my atelier to be reconditioned for the display, it became very emotional and yet energizing. All of them were landmarks in my friendship and working relationship with Lee. My team and I reminisced over each piece, show, and the memories attached to them. This speared on the idea of the Reflective series. We wanted to recreate a collection with the energy and style of the original McQueen-Leane creations as well as the House of Shaun Leane’s spirit today.

The Coiled Corset for the La Dame Blue Spring 2008 collection (pictured above, left) is extraordinary and translates beautifully into the Quill cuff (above, right).
The Quills really show the edge and sense of line Lee and I liked to explore.

Tell me about the star pendant inspired by your headpiece for the In Memory of Elizabeth Howe, Salem 1692 fall 2007 collection.
The star headpiece shows the direction Lee and I were moving in—bringing fine jewelry styles to the catwalk in an avant-garde manner. The McQueen headpiece was purposely crafted to reveal the antique Victorian jewelry influence. It was the perfect example for me to recreate in fine jewelry since the original inspiration for the headpieces was a Victorian star brooch.

And then there are those amazing Eagle Claw Ball Gold and Silver Earrings inspired by the dramatic feather headpiece you did for The Widows of Culloden Fall 2006 collection.
I wanted to re-visit the subject of birds and falconry because it inspired us both in many ways. The eagle headdress was a balance of macabre and beauty. I wanted to recreate that in these earrings

The Deep Meaning Behind Olivia Pope’s Striped Jacket from Last Night’s Scandal

The ladies of brought it on last night’s episode. From one scene to the next, we couldn’t help but notice how amazing the wardrobe choices were—did you spot the leather dress worn by ’s Olivia Pope? Even guest star, , showed a different side of herself.

“We really felt that we had to create a different version of Lena,” the show’s costume designer, Lyn Paolo, told InStyle. “We tried to make everything that she wore more structured than she normally would wear. Lena would say, ‘These are grown-up lady clothes!'” The fittings with Dunham were memorable for Paolo as well. “She was a riot,” he said. “We laughed a lot in the fittings. She did selfies in Olivia’s white hat!”

As for last night’s episode, Paolo made sure to juxtapose Dunham’s character, Suzanne Thomas, with Olivia Pope by dressing both of them in contrasting bright blues in one scene. For Olivia, her striped blue jacket had a deeper meaning though.

“She’s trying to get back to normal, but she’s still struggling,” Paolo said. “This was our way of bringing her out of it a little bit. We rarely use that tone of blue, but you also see her usual grays and blacks in that jacket as well.” Olivia is slowly emerging from her shell, and even though it has been a difficult transition for her, she’s more like herself in each passing scene.

Get the Style Scoop on the Season Finale Looks from Empire’s Costume Designer Rita McGhee

A death, a pregnancy, an arrest, a misdiagnosis, a hostile takeover, and an anointed heir for the Empire throne—was there ever any doubt that the Empire season finale would dish out anything less? FOX’s record-breaking, hip-hop soap opera has been jam-packed with juicy twists and turns in every episode, but the shocking revelations and hundred-watt star power of last night’s explosive, over-the-top finale left viewers with their jaws on the floor.

The two-hour event answered a lot of questions, raised some new ones, and featured everything from the accidental murder of Vernon (Malik Yoba) by a pregnant Rhonda (Kaitlin Doubleday), to Lucious (Terrence Howard) naming Jamal (Jussie Smollett) his successor even after we discover that Lucious was misdiagnosed with ALS and is no longer facing imminent death (but is however facing some jail time for the murder of his best friend Bunkie), to Snoop Dogg performing his new song “Peaches and Cream.” The finale’s impressive cameo roster also included performances by Juicy J, Patti LaBelle, Rita Ora, and returning guest star Jennifer Hudson.

Courtesy of FOX

Unlike all the other aforementioned guest stars, Hudson is playing neither a successful musician nor an Empire performer. Instead, she is playing the role of Michelle White, Andre’s (Trai Byers) music therapist and a devout Christian who is leading him down a new, spiritual path. Lucious uses Michelle in an attempt to break Andre’s newfound faith and prove that the lure of Lucious Lyons is more enticing the lure of God himself. Lucious offers Michelle a contract with Empire and in a shocking move—she accepts! “Jennifer’s stylist brought in a custom-made, white leather dress (above) for her on-stage performance at Lucious’s concert,” explains Rita McGhee, the costume designer of Empire. “She is a gospel singer and is from the church so she wore a white, flouncy dress to portray her naivety of the industry and her purity…however this sleeveless, short dress is less conservative and reveals more skin than she usually does and the texture of the dress is leather, which shows viewers that she might be able to be part of this world and become a star.”

Courtesy of FOX

In an even more shocking move, Boo-Boo Kitty and Cookie agree to team up for a hostile takeover of the Empire—but not without a catfight first! “I put Anika in the red BCBG jumpsuit (above) instead of her usual uniform of a skirt or a dress because those garments can be restrictive…she might need to move fast to dodge a punch or get ready to fight if she is meeting up with Cookie,” laughs McGhee. “When Anika is with Lucious she wears dresses to play on her femininity, but now she is alone and in control of her life. She is ready to get down to business,” McGhee reveals to InStyle. “Also, red is her signature color. She feels strong and powerful when she wears red and definitely needs strength and courage if she’s seeing Cookie.”

Courtesy of FOX

Contrastingly, Cookie, who usually looks ready to fight in predatory animal prints, wore a print that reflects their soon-to-be partnership. “The pattern on Cookie’s Elizabeth and James dress (above) reminded me of twigs and trees intertwined with each other, which worked beautifully with the scene since they end up forming a new alliance with each other,” McGhee divulges.

In the final scene, we see that the hostile takeover is in full-effect as Cookie watches Lucious get hauled away by police officers for the murder of her cousin Bunkie. “I picked this gorgeous red lace dress by Galia Lahav (below) for her last look because Cookie has the power now and she is taking over the Empire,” reveals McGhee. “I love the juxtaposition of this dress because the lace is soft and feminine but the red is strong and powerful.”

We can’t wait to see what next season has in store for us—rumors are already buzzing around that Oprah, Lenny Kravitz, Mariah Carey, Denzel Washington and Alicia Keys are set to make appearances!

How Zoe Saldana Became a Fan of the Color Pink

may be known for taking red carpet risks, and that’s in part thanks to her stylist Petra Flannery who also boasts clients like , , and .

But one color Saldana was never interested in wearing in the past? Pink. “I’m not a pink girl. I was always against pink,” Saldana tells InStyle at The Hollywood Reporter & Jimmy Choo’s 5th annual 25 Most Powerful Stylists Luncheon yesterday. “I think it took Petra the first two years of our relationship for her to build up my confidence to wearing pink, and not feel weak or like a chick. I was equating it to all the wrong things, and pink is such a strong color. It’s so feminine but also very striking and commanding. And so she gets me to wear all shades of pink now.”

In the past year, the actress has been spotted in multiple hues of the color, from fuchsia to barely blush.

Zoe Saldana Charles Sykes/Bravo/NBCU Photo Bank; Jason Merritt/Getty Images

And when it comes deciding what the actress will wear, she reveals that it’s a joint effort: “It’s a very artistic process, and it’s always fun,” says Saldana. “For me, it’s never a strategic thing. I go by my moods. If I’m feeling really feminine, then we’ll do something with color. If I’m feeling like blue, we’ll do something that reflects that. Petra respects that you’re an artist, and she also respects everybody’s personalityshe just tries to enhance it. She knows that the happier you are wearing an outfit, the more you’re going to rock it. She pushes me in all the right places.”

Flannery, who was awarded the top spot on The Hollywood Reporter’s annual list, also knows how to make getting red carpet-ready above all, a good time. “It’s all about having fun,” Saldana shares. “We always put some music on. We always do voices. We play characters. An hour fitting ends up becoming a four or five hour thing where we order food and drink champagne. It has to be fun for me because if the creative process isn’t, then what I’m wearing just feels very superficial and very fleeting.”

Mindy Kaling Redefines “Athleisure” on This Week’s The Mindy Project

Last night’s showed us a side of that we never thought we’d see. Our favorite diva doctor and mom-to-be traded in her bold ensembles and brightly colored accessories for tracksuits. Yes, tracksuits. “It’s a very special Mindy Lahiri,” costume designer Salvador Perez tells InStyle.

The reason? Mindy is struggling with her confidence as she starts to gain pregnancy weight. Poor Mindy! To reflect her mood, they decided to take a page out of Morgan Tookers book and try out tracksuits. However, don’t for one second think that these looks weren’t tailored. “They were completely re-cut to be the most flattering things possible,” Perez reveals.

Initially they tried out bright pink and aqua tracksuits, but they decided that it didn’t fit the feel of the scene. “The whole point was she was depressed, so we had to go dark,” Perez says. “The bright colorful ones were adorable, but we couldn’t have her looking adorable or people wouldn’t feel sorry for her.” With that in mind he went with a navy Adidas tracksuit (below) and a black Adidas short suit (above, very top). He even paired the black look with a knee-high socks. “If you’re going to go for the shorts then you have to have the tall socks,” Perez says. “It was so wrong it was right.”

The Mindy Project John P. Fleenor/FOX

To get her groove back, Tamra enlists her cousin, played by the fabulous Laverne Cox. While they do successfully get her out of the tracksuits, it’s not quite the Mindy look we’re used to seeing. When this doesn’t go over so well with Danny, she suits back up, but thankfully by the end of the episode Dr. Castellano is able to get her back to feeling her best self.

For the final scene, Perez dressed her in a knit dress (below). “The whole point of the episode was for Mindy to stop fighting and embrace herself, so we wanted this dress to be something that was in her closet that she realized she could still wear,” Perez explains. The knit dress hugged her curves so well—look out for it in next week’s finale.

We’ll be chatting with Perez every week about our favorite looks from The Mindy Project, so be sure to check back in next week!

The Secret to the Flawless Makeup on DWTS? Frequent Touch-Ups and Spray-Tan Sundays

A new season of officially kicked off last night and behind every skilled dancer is a team of talented makeup artists making all the right moves—not unlike the intricate floor routines seen on camera.

Head makeup artist Zena Shteysel has been with the show for its entire run, with two Emmy wins as a testament to her impeccable handiwork, but with factors like quick movements, hot stage lights, and sweat coming into play, the pro has seen her fare share of beauty mishaps.

“We’ve had a few of those—hair comes undone during the dance, we’ve gotten red lipstick smeared on the face, sometimes makeup will get on the men’s white shirts, and since it’s live, there’s only so much you can do,” Shteysel tells InStyle. “We do our best to prevent it, and if we ever see lipstick on the teeth or anything like that, as soon as the camera is off or they cut to commercial, we are in there fixing the problem.”

Shteysel and her team rely on long-wearing products, which get sorted by look into a magnetic Z Palette ($20; ) to keep each star looking flawless, but the commercial breaks become essential for touching up. As if the NASCAR pit crew were armed with makeup brushes, roughly three artists work on each dancer and celebrity before the live taping resumes. “Once I’ve created a look, I put all of the products I’ve used into a Z Paltte, which makes everything so much easier and faster,” she says. “When you have everything right there, it only takes a minute or two to fix everything during the commercial breaks where time is of the essence.”

Don’t expect to see any body-bronzing mishaps, though. Thanks to the cast’s weekly tanning regimen, Shteysel and her team have the process down to a science. “We have what we call spray tan Sundays, where everyone comes in on Sunday to get tanned,” she tells us. “We have two body makeup artists who take care of the whole cast, and we also use the South Seas Island Glow Body Bronzer ($26; ) to give shimmer at the base and make everything look flawless.”

From start to finish, it takes the team two hours to complete a look, though the body makeup is the first thing to be applied. “We do that first so it sets throughout the day as they’re practicing, and won’t transfer onto the wardrobe,” says Shteysel. “Once everything is dry and the costumes are on, we apply the Glow Body Bronzer, and work around the outfits.”

Even if you don’t plan to cut a rug like the current celebrity cast, the body bronzing tip is one that can be incorporated into your routine through spring and beyond. Before applying a layer of the South Seas Body Bronzer, Shteysel has every star exfoliate their skin to impart the most even coverage possible. She and her team follow by applying foundation to areas that need a little extra love—like over bruises from practice sessions, or to contour a chiseled set of abs—then top off with a layer of spray tan, and an extra coat of bronzer if needed.

We’re counting down the days until Insurgent is out (one more week!) and star has never looked better onscreen or off. Most recently, for the film’s London premiere on Wednesday, the actress turned heads in a gorgeous ivory gown. And according to her stylist, Ilaria Urbinati, there is so much more to come.

“It’s fun to surprise people with fashion,” says Urbanati, who described the star’s style as simple and clean. “Shailene likes to be comfortable and casual in her personal life, but we go big for big events.” Over the years, Woodley has tackled many trends, from colored leather to Hawaiian prints, with her signature effortless ease. “Shailene always stays true to herself,” Urbanati says. “She is five-foot-ten and can wear practically any silhouette or color, but she doesn’t like things that are too fussy or girly.”

And as Woodley’s career evolves, expect her look to follow suit. “Her aesthetic changes from film to film, so it’s my job to find outfits that speak to her and express who she is,” adds Urbanati. No matter what the role, “she goes for the wow moment every single time.”
