Dior x J - Law; The Modern Woman's Fashion

The combinations of Dior, Jennifer Lawrence and Graphic T-shirts has to be a millennial match made in heaven. In her second collection, Maria Grazia Chiuri is putting relaxed sophistication at the forefront of her message.

Who is Maria Grazia Chiuri?

Maria Grazia Chiuri, the first female head of Christian Dior has not shied away from discussing her ground-breaking position as the first woman in charge at Dior, rather she has embraced it. She is reinventing the classic French fashion house for today’s woman—a woman who is both feminine and feminist. Chiuri’s signature look for her Dior debut show last fall was a t-shirt emblazoned with the slogan, We Should All Be Feminists, which was coined by Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. This t-shirt has become an emblem of the house’s new face and carried through to the new campaign.

Maria Grazia, as she’s known, spent 17 years as the co-creative director at Valentino (and spent 10 years at Fendi prior) before becoming the sole head of Dior. She brings a playfulness and independent streak to Dior. She fully embraces feminism—it’s not just a slogan on a shirt for her, it’s her way of being.

In interviews she talks about the importance of being a strong and self-reliant woman in today’s world. She designs for both young artists living in the punk scene and working women climbing the career ladder—Maria Grazia’s goal is to help all women, regardless of age or experience, express themselves through fashion - to look and feel their best. She has a hand in nearly every aspect of the design, from lookbook layouts to Dior boutique arrangements—she is the woman in charge of it all, and it’s clear that she would have it no other way.

What is different about this campaign?

For this show Maria Grazia has enlisted the help of French photographer Brigitte Lacombe – who has an innate ability for sending shockwaves of raw humanity through her work.

The effect is that Jennifer Lawrence becomes the emblem of the modern woman. The monochrome shoot highlights the message of the We Should All Be Feminists t-shirt that we have been seeing everywhere for months now. The decadent glamour has been stripped back to reveal a woman dressed rather than adorned, in Dior.

Lawrence sits loosely against walls and on floors in ripped boyfriend jeans and pointed flats. The images are filled with accessibility. This is a far cry from haute couture catwalk shows with the front rows packed with Instafamous people. Or indeed the older trend some fashion houses preferred of very young and thin women in uncomfortably sexual positions.

Lawrence is her own person and that is why she has long since been adored by the world. She falls, just like we do. She is a wonderful choice for a company that is managing so well to be part of a changing conversation around the role of the modern women.

This is Chiuri’s second bold move for the company and we’re excited to see what she will bring to the fashion world in 2017…

5 Best London Restaurants with a City View

London is more than 1,000 years old. You can still see bits of the wall the Romans put around the capital to keep Boudicca out. Londoners kept on building: there’s 700-year-old medieval churches and courtyards and the brooding shape of the Tower of London. There’s delicate Elizabethan shops and streets, soaring St Paul’s Cathedral, elegant Regency arcades and proud Victorian museums and institutions. You’ll find post-war Brutalism and soaring contemporary towers. Here’s the thing about London: all these buildings all jostle side by side in a vivid, rich tapestry of eras and styles, reminding you of all the lives and stories held within this most powerful city. It is one of the best places in the world for viewing. Just to cap it all off (and in case it’s raining), why not nibble on some delicious food and wine to wash it all down? Here are five of our favourite London restaurants with a view.

Duck & Waffle

Located on the 40th floor of Heron Tower, this British European restaurant manages to combine mouth-watering food with spectacular, off-the wall views past the Gherkin to the river, beyond to Canary Wharf and across the whole panoply of South London. It’s open 24 hours a day and you can indeed order the actual duck and waffle: waffles, duck confit, a fried duck egg and maple syrup (though there are many other dishes that won’t give you an instant heart attack). If you can’t get in, on the next floor down you’ll find Sushisamba, a funky Peruvian/Japanese fusion restaurant (but we do recommend Duck & Waffle).

Aqua Shard

The Shard stunned the world when it opened in 2009: a 95-storey skyscraper rearing out of London’s Southbank, one made apparently entirely out of glass with its jagged peak virtually lost in the clouds. It’s such a huge building it boasts offices, hotels, a very popular viewing platform and no less than four restaurants: Oblix, Hutong, Ting and our favourite, Aqua. Serving contemporary British cuisine, this 31st floor eatery offers phenomenal 200˚ views across London, accessorised by the breathtaking three-storey-high Atrium Bar. The menu (and cocktails) is excellent, but prepare your wallet...

OXO Tower Restaurant, Bar and Brasserie

The Oxo Tower is a London institution. The iconic illuminated tower came about because when the company that owned OXO gravy cubes was refused permission to put up advertising, mysteriously the tower windows formed a pattern saying OXO...! Nowadays it’s just pretty Art Deco lighting – but with a great restaurant nestled just below the tower. This uncluttered, elegant space offers wonderful river views across to St. Paul’s Cathedral. The restaurant is run by Harvey Nichols and is fresh, clever and never less than excellent – do try their innovative new vegetarian menu. If you come in summer, it’s worth speculatively booking a terrace table (and praying for no rain) – it’s a full sensorial experience.

The Portrait Restaurant

Sometimes views don’t have to be lofty – they just need to be utterly iconic, in which case The Portrait Restaurant absolutely corners the market. Situated inside the National Portrait Gallery, its generous windows offer up Nelson’s Column, down Whitehall to the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and the London Eye. It’s high enough for distance while being close enough to Trafalgar Square to people watch. And the food is quietly excellent too: generous, carefully considered dishes based on British and European traditions, using first-rate produce.

City Garden Bar

Not a restaurant in the most traditional sense, this stunning bar offers lights snacks and sandwiches during the day, switching to delicious sharing boards by early evening. This newly opened bar sits snuggly among the magnificent surrounds of Sky Garden, the city’s highest garden at 37 floors above ground level. Fittingly, for the coming summer months, the bar has launched a bespoke pop-up Belvedere Spritz bar serving an exclusive botanically-inspired summer cocktail selection. And to complete the cool summer vibe you can relax to the sounds of live music and up-and-coming guest performers in the Summer Sessions, running to September.

Cocktail Casanova; An Interview with Salvatore Calabrese

The world's most famous bartender Salvatore Calabrese, whose cocktail books have sold over two million copies and has mixed drinks for Robert de Niro, Elton John and her Royal Majesty the Queen, has a new London home at The Mule Bar in Spitalfields.

'The Maestro', as he is known, will be working alongside his sons, Gerry and Jon Calabrese and will transport guests back to the swinging sixties with a career-spanning menu. Premier Tax Free caught up with the man himself...

Why have you decided to step back in time at The Mule Bar?

I wanted to do something unlike anything else being currently offered in London. We came up with a sixties concept because the speakeasy idea has been overdone and is also representative of quite a depressing era in our history when people drank to forget. The sixties on the other hand was fun so we wanted to inject this feeling into our drinks list. It’s the same with the décor which pays homage to the swinging sixties. When you think of this era you think of flower power, freedom and the birth of Rock ‘n’ Roll, the colour palette was bright, people were optimistic about the future generally and we wanted to reflect this throughout the space. The sixties also saw the birth of the modern cocktail party!

You will be hosting regular masterclasses and tastings, what can we expect from them?

I have one of the world's largest collections of rare cognacs and love nothing better than talking through the history of this special drink, so one idea is to bring in a master blender to do a tasting with a historical overview. I even have a cognac from 1788, the year before The French Revolution and before Australia was discovered so these are always very interesting.

Where did you learn your craft?

I started in 1966 at the age of 12 and I developed my skills at a bar on the Amalfi Coast in Southern Italy. My first duty was to get up at 5.30am and slice the bread. That was when I first understood the need for perfectionism as each piece of bread had to be the same size.

And who was your mentor?

Signor Raffelle ran the bar and he was truly the Humphrey Bogart of the Amalfi Coast. He was always in an immaculate cream jacket, had the most incredible charm, spoke several languages and knew how to make people happy. He taught me how to appreciate and learn flavours through aroma. I made my first Americano at the age of 12, I was quite a cocky little boy. Signor saw me and stopped me, he tasted it and then slapped me so hard for getting ahead of myself that even now every time I make a Negroni I do the sign of the cross and look over my shoulder to check he isn't still there!

What qualities make for a great bartender?

Being a great mixologist doesn't always make a great bartender. The creativity that is needed to make drinks needs to be combined with the art of hospitality. People will come to your bar to see you; it is a hugely social profession and very similar to being a chef or sommelier in that respect. It's important to love what you do and be fond of people, there can be no ego and arrogance in our profession.

What have been the highlights of your career?

Meeting some truly iconic people such as Robert de Niro and Elton John, plus making drinks for Her Royal Highness the Queen. Also, being awarded multiple lifetime achievement awards such as an OBE from my native Italy, which was a huge honour and having that recognition means a lot to me.

Premier Tax Free users are a jet-setting bunch, so what are your favourite bars from around the world?

This is a hard one as in my opinion a bar doesn't need to be anywhere, it's the people that make it, but if I have to choose I would say The Nottingham Forest Bar in Milan, it has one of the best bartenders in the world there, Dario Comini. He is an exceptional host and views it as his home and people feel that pride and welcome from him from the moment they enter.

Plus, The Hoxton Pony - this is my son's bar, and it has a great crowd and really great music. Finally, try High Five in Tokyo, a classic Ginza-style bar. Just don’t ask for a menu there isn’t one!

If you could only have one more cocktail what would it be?

I’m going to be greedy and opt for two. Firstly, a Sazerac made with my 1805 Sazerac Cognac as this is no longer made and so is truly one of its kind. Secondly, it has to be the Negroni as it's what I'm known for and I love making and drinking it.

Finally, shaken or stirred?

Stirred of course!  Martin Campbell, the director of several James Bond films, wanted me to prepare a Martini in his movie Casino Royale. But I could not accept, they wanted me to shake the Martini. I've been saying for years that Martini was not meant to be shaken.

PREMIER GEM

The brand’s co-founder, Laura Kofoid, likens the customization process to interior design. Working one-on-one with customers, staffers help them select a bag shape, an Italian leather, a lining, gold or silver hardware, __and other personalized touches such as contrasting binding or monograms.

There’s a flat-screen TV onsite that pulls up renderings of the final product; the brand’s website also allows shoppers to draft bags before ordering them. After they’ve been ordered, bags are stitched up in a local studio, then delivered to the customer in three to five weeks. Oh, __and as for the store’s unusual name? Chicago’s Most Lavish New Spa Service Will Leave You Glittering

This Week’s Top Story

A good spa treatment will make your skin glow—and that’s literally the case with The Spa at JW Marriott’s (151 W. Adams St., marriott.com) new 24 Karat Gold Package. The lavish service includes the application of a golden mud that leaves a faint trace of glitter—and a lot of skin-softening moisture—behind. The only thing is, you’ll need to set aside four hours for this.

How do you spend half a day in a spa? To start, you’ll get an 80-minute facial. Next, it’s time to step into the spa’s Turkish-style hammam, where you’ll be painted in that golden mud, wrapped up in gold foil, __and given a head massage. But don’t fall asleep yet: There’s still an 80-minute massage to go.

You’ll even get some thematic sustenance to carry you through it all. Between the facial __and the body wrap, spa-goers adjourn to a lounge filled with plushy velvet chairs to sip champagne and nibble on confections dipped in—you guessed it—edible gold. The whole service costs $795. Best Mother’s Day gift ever?

Repetto arrives on the Champs-Elysées

The most famous avenue in the world is still highly sought after judging by current negotiations for its store locations. One of them just recently found a buyer. Indeed Maison Repetto is set to open a new store, taking over the empty spot left by Maje, which is moving a little further.

Number 33 of the Champs-Elysées avenue will thus welcome Repetto’s sixth Parisian boutique. Its public opening is scheduled on March 15th.

The 140 square meters space will include the different categories of Repetto’s offer, meaning leather goods, shoes, active line and dance materials. We will also find the customization service ‘atelier’, until now only available at the brand’s historical flagship store, rue de la Paix.

This beautiful Champs-Elysées address is thus adding to the brand’s 127 points of sale around the world (department stores’ corners and boutiques together).
